Description

Pediatric obesity is a serious chronic disease that has both immediate and long-term impact on children and adolescents’ health. The latest evidence highlighted in the AAP Clinical Practice Guideline on Evaluation Treatment of Pediatric Obesity1  states that despite the complex nature of this disease, obesity treatment can be successful.

During the COVID-19 pandemic there was a documented increase in children with overweight and obesity further heightening the need to build capacity for effective assessment, evaluation, and treatment of pediatric overweight and obesity. This Assessment and Evaluation CME module will support building capacity at the point of care around the clinical practice recommendations in the Clinical Practice Guideline to better identify, assess and evaluate pediatric obesity in primary care.  A comprehensive evaluation is the first step to effective obesity treatment. For more information on the CPG recommendations for longitudinal obesity treatment, be sure to also take the Obesity Treatment module

As learners, by the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the methodology of the CPG1 and high-level recommendations.
  • Summarize relevance of obesity as a chronic disease and associated drivers, causes, and impacts.
  • Diagnose overweight and obesity.
  • Describe components of effective obesity assessment and evaluation (ROS, PE, diagnostics, etc).
  • Explain comorbidity work-up for key comorbid conditions.
