The goal of this ECHO is to provide pediatricians and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills for addressing substance use concerns in adolescents using Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), within the context of rural healthcare environment.

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the scope of the problem of substance use in adolescents
  • Discuss pediatric providers role in preventing and treating substance use in adolescents
  • Review the fundamental components of screening, brief interventions, and referral to treatment (SBIRT)

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the laws in your state related to confidentiality practices and substance use
  • Discuss documentation, workflow, billing/coding, and confidentiality in an office setting
  • Understand how to establish confidentiality practices to help ensure the quality of information shared by the adolescent and to ensure patient privacy of screening test results and information discussed during visits and follow-up care

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify who and when to screen for substance use
  • Understand how to screen for substance use using validated screening tools

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the spirit and principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Discuss how MI can be applied with youth within the framework of SBIRT
  • Articulate specific MI Skills “Support and Guide” model

Participants will be able to:

  • Define a Brief Intervention (BI) and understand goals of Bis
  • Identify the key steps of a BI
  • Explore how Bis can be used to prevent, reduce, or stop risky behaviors

Participants will be able to recognize the importance of:

  • Providing medical home care as a continuum around SBIRT: Screening - Brief Intervention – Referral to Treatment (RT)
  • Categorizing substance use by potential risk level: Connects SBI approach/outcomes with RT planning/implementation
  • Identifying, developing, coordinating and collaborating with informational, therapeutic, and recovery-sustaining resources
  • Continuing active patient and parent engagement in the care plan

  • Identify 3 pharmacologic options for treating substance use disorder in pediatric primary care
