Program Goals

  • To provide training in evidence-based clinical teaching strategies to improve daily teaching in practice
  • To introduce both basic and advanced educational approaches, with emphasis on:
    • The Learning Environment
    • Effective Clinical Teaching
    • Giving Feedback
    • Working with Learners in Difficulty
    • Building a Career in Medical Education
    • Teaching Scholarship: Cohort Workshop Development
  • To offer safe opportunities to engage in deliberate practice of educational skills
  • To create a national cohort of educators with senior mentorship
  • To improve clinical teaching effectiveness and efficiency through a “train-the-trainer” model

Program Objectives

By the end of the 2-year program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe basic and advanced principles and strategies for clinical teaching, including:
    • Creating an effective learning climate
    • Teaching effectively and efficiently on the fly
    • Giving effective feedback
    • Developing plans for working with struggling learners
    • Creating faculty development opportunities for teaching skills
    • Disseminating teaching skills training through national workshops
  • Demonstrate effective use of these strategies and principles in their own clinical teaching
  • Develop and implement teaching innovations in their own clinical practice
  • Share teaching innovations and ideas with their program cohort through web-based and onsite discussion
  • Establish relationships with other educators nationally
  • Implement clinical teaching for others at their home institution

Program Content

  • Anchored each year at the national Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) or Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) conference
  • Blended learning model that includes face-to-face learning at two sequential half-day pre-conference workshops, as well as quarterly assignments via the APEX online learning platform, participation in elective workshops, and clinical teaching observations by a local expert mentor.

Interval Curriculum

  • Online platform for sharing reflections, participating in facilitated discussions, and completing quarterly assignments
  • Two (2) onsite direct observations of teaching by a local mentor, as well as reflection and feedback after observations
  • If needed, APEX Steering Committee will assist participants with limited resources in finding appropriate mentors (inter-departmental or inter-institutional)

Elective Curriculum

  • Three (3) education-focused elective workshops selected from approved tracks at national conferences, including PHM, PAS, COMSEP, APPD, and others
  • APEX Steering Committee will review and designate qualifying workshops at other national meetings; however, adequate opportunities are available to complete all 3 electives in Year 1 of either the PHM or PAS conference
