YouTube shows users ads based on their activity. To control what ads you see, users can adjust the personalized ads in Ad Settings.
When ad personalization is on, you can choose any info – age and gender, an inferred interest, or a previous interaction with an advertiser – to learn more about why it’s being used, turn it off, or deactivate personalized ads altogether. You’ll still see ads, but they’ll most likely be less relevant.

Age-Related Content Filters
For users to manage their own YouTube/Google account, they must be age 13 in the United States. However, YouTube videos can be viewed without creating a Google account or verifying the user's age. To manage what videos your child can access, parents may want to create accounts in YouTube Kids or supervised accounts with Google Family Link.
Families can decide what YouTube experience is best for them. To learn about the differences between a supervised experience on YouTube and the YouTube Kids app, check out this page. For supervised experiences, parents must use their own Google accounts to set up and manage that experience for their children.
With supervised experiences for pre-teens, parents can select a content setting that limits the videos and music that children under the age of 13 can find and play.
For all users, a set of Community Guidelines outlines what type of content isn’t allowed on YouTube. These policies apply to all types of content on the platform, including videos, comments, links, and thumbnails.
For content that doesn't violate YouTube's Community Guidelines but may be inappropriate for viewers under 18, YouTube may place an age restriction on the video. See examples of types of content that may be age-restricted here.
For all users under 18, additional guardrails are implemented to limit repeated recommendations of videos related to certain topics. These topics were selected in consultation with YouTube’s Youth & Families Advisory Committee.
Parents of teens aged 13 or above who have added supervision to their teen's Google Account can also use Restricted mode to help screen out potentially mature content.
Default Settings: Privacy
Default video privacy setting for creators aged 13-17 is private. If you’re 18 or older, your default video privacy setting is set to public. Everyone can change this setting to make their video public, private, or unlisted.

Pre-teens with a supervised account set to the “Most of YouTube” or “Explore more” content setting can read, but not post, comments. For added safety, the comment experience for pre-teen supervised accounts also includes stricter comment filters for younger audiences, the removal of comments with links, and more. If you don't want your pre-teen to have access to comments, you can switch to the 'Explore' content setting.
