Pinterest is a free online creative space where users "" images, videos, and products to their personal "boards" on their profiles. Pins range from content featuring crafts and drawings to photography, baking, outfit ideas, decorations based on certain themes or holidays, and more. Users may share their pins with other Pinterest users and categorize them on their boards.

Advertisements frequently appear on Pinterest as regular content or pins. The key difference is ads will have include text at the bottom of the post indicating “Sponsored” or “Shop Now.” When users click on it, they will be directed to the brand’s website rather than a page on Pinterest.

Users can:

  • Opt out of personalized ads on Pinterest. 
  • Update data sharing preferences off Pinterest. 
  • Update web activity preferences/Update mobile apps preferences. 
  • Completely turn off personalization.

Private Profile: Teen accounts under 16 are private with no option to change their profile to public.  

When a profile is private, the profile won’t be discoverable, but a user can invite people to follow their account. 

If a user is under 16, their boards and Pins will only be visible to themself by default. The teen user can  collaborate on a group board with the people they know as long as they are old enough to have a Pinterest account. 

Comments: If a user is under 18, comments will be turned off automatically on Pins they create until the user is 18. Users can adjust this in comment settings at any time.

Home feed tuner: A user’s home recommends Pins based on the creators they follow, and the users’ boards, topics, and browsing history. The home feed tuner lets users customize preferences based on: 

  • Activity: Turn off recommendations based on Pins you have looked at. 
  • Boards: Turn off recommendations based on specific boards. 
  • Interests: Remove topics you no longer wish to see recommendations for. 
  • Following: See and edit who you follow on Pinterest.  

Reporting: Users can report a Pin, comment, message, board or account that doesn’t seem right. Pinterest will remove or limit the distribution of content that contributes to an unsafe environment. A user will not be informed who reported them. 

Blocking: A user can block people or business accounts from , messaging, or interacting with the user’s Pins.

Messaging: Users under 16 can exchange messages with mutual  and may receive message requests from group board collaborators. As they get older, their settings will be adjusted to allow them to contact more people. While Pinterest’s default settings are designed to allow safe connections with people you know, users can change their settings at any time to make them more strict.

Follower Controls: If a user’s profile is private, they can share a unique profile link with people they want to invite to follow their account. A shared link will expire after three days or after it's used by five people. Users can remove followers and unfollow people at any time.

A parent/caregiver of a teen under 18 can set up a four-digit passcode to lock certain settings and provide guidance on their teen's Pinterest account. The passcode expires when the teen turns 18, and it can be turned off in settings at any time.
