ChatGPT

Started by the company OpenAI, ChatGPT (or Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is a generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. Generative AI, also called gen AI, is based on computer-generated networks of interconnected data (both old data and recently manufactured data). These large amounts of data are blended to produce a novel answer to questions that a user asks the chatbot. Gen AI systems like ChatGPT learn to generate answers for users that look like the data they were trained on.

Users can receive answers to all kinds of questions and requests, from “What is a good recipe for crispy chicken parm?” to “Make me an outline for my history essay about the French Revolution.” Once a question or request is made, answers pop up quickly and are delivered in a conversational format.

ChatGPT can be used on its website/desktop version or downloaded as a mobile app.

Age-Related Content Filters

Age-Related Content Filters

OpenAI recommends ChatGPT to users 13 years of age and up. New users enter a birthdate when creating an account, but age is not formally verified. For users 13-18, OpenAI requires that parents/caregivers give parental consent before using the chatbot.

It is important to note that ChatGPT does not cite its sources or where the original information it is delivering came from. OpenAI advises kids 13+ to be cautious when using the chatbot, as it can still make mistakes, disseminate misinformation, and provide false or biased answers. As a developing tool, ChatGPT may not fully filter inappropriate or undesirable content.

Feed Controls (E.g., Block, Report, State Not Interested)

ChatGPT has some guardrails to handle inappropriate or harmful requests, but sometimes it will still answer them. The is the specific guardrail used – it blocks some unsafe content, but Open AI discloses that it will have too.

Moderation API analyzes text inputs from users and determines whether the content is sexual, hateful, violent, or promotes self-harm. This process lowers the likelihood that ChatGPT will generate wrong or biased information.

OpenAI also prohibits and filters users’ inputs involving child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and child sexual exploitation material (CSEM). The company reports and blocks users who try to upload CSAM or CSEM.

The only notifications that ChatGPT sends are related to scheduled tasks, in which users can create “” for the model to run later on. After creating a task, users will be sent push notifications or emails when ChatGPT finishes their request.

How to control notifications for scheduled tasks in ChatGPT:

  • In “Settings,” go to “Notifications
  • Choose either “push” or “email” for the kind of notification preferred
  • After a user has toggled on the notifications in the mobile app, scheduled task notifications will be delivered on any platform where ChatGPT is used (desktop and mobile apps)
  • These notifications can also be disabled in “Settings” on the ChatGPT website

Parent/Caregiver Supervision Options

Parent/Caregiver Supervision Options

There is currently no “kids' version” of ChatGPT, but the platform does offer some parent/caregiver supervision options:

  • Content Moderation – Filters in the app aim to prevent harmful, offensive, or inappropriate content from being created by the chatbot
  • User Feedback – Users can identify whether an output by the app is inappropriate and give feedback to Open AI
  • Chat History & Personalization – Users can look at their history of questions and answers on the app. Parents/caregivers can review their child’s interactions with ChatGPT on their child’s account. An account is not needed to use ChatGPT, but it is needed in order to save and view a user’s history
