BeReal is a social media platform based on spontaneity and authenticity. Users receive a notification each day at a random moment, in which they are prompted to stop what they’re doing and take a selfie and a photo of their surroundings in real time. The front and back cameras are utilized to capture the user’s whole current experience. This photo, which is called a “BeReal,” is immediately posted to the user’s feed, where the user can view, react to, and comment on others’ posts too. If a user misses the notification window, which is 2 minutes, they can share a photo (marked as late) at any other point in the day.
Users must post their own BeReal to view those of their friends. In other words, content on the app can’t be seen unless a teen has an account and has posted their own photo first.
Common Sense Media’s Recommended Age for Using BeReal: 13+
In December 2024, BeReal announced they will start integrating in-feed advertising into users' daily feeds.
BeReal also offers RealPeople and RealBrands, which lets users see in-the-moment content from celebrities and brands, making them RealFans. The individuals with profiles on these features of the app must follow the same rules as any other user – post on time (when the notification pops up with a 2-minute warning) with no filters.
BeReal does not offer age-related content filters.
When creating a BeReal account, users are prompted to grant the app access to their phone’s contact list. This enables the app to identify contacts who also have BeReal, making it easier for users to connect and view their friends' content. Users can stop sharing their contacts by heading to “Settings,” then “Privacy,” and finally turning off “Contact sync.”
BeReal users’ phone numbers are not automatically shared with other users. Users can decide whether they want to share their number by going to “Settings,” then “Privacy,” and turning off “Find me by my phone number.” As soon as this feature is toggled off, other individuals can’t search for that user by phone number, and that user will stop getting friend recommendations based on their number.
BeReal users can make a report about inappropriate content, or content that violates the Community Standards, via reporting tools in the mobile app or the web form. On the mobile app, users must hit the 3-dot menu on the BeReal photo itself, a user’s whole profile, or in a group chat and then select the report option. When a report is submitted, BeReal will delete that content temporarily or permanently.
BeReal does allow direct messaging through a feature called RealChat. In RealChat, users can send private replies to friends’ photos and can send BeReals privately. Users can only chat with users in their friend list.
The Friends of Friends feed provides users with an easy way to discover their closest friends and family who are already on BeReal.
