Welcome to the Section on Medicine & Pediatrics (Med-Peds). As a Section, we have been busy organizing and advocating for Med-Peds physicians since 1997. Currently the Section has over 3,500 members. The Section is the home for physicians trained in treating adults and children. We help to ensure a strong pipeline and a united voice on activities, research, advocacy and education that is important to Med-Peds physicians.

Mission Statement

The American Academy of Pediatrics Section on combined internal medicine and pediatrics (Med-Peds) is dedicated to promoting and enhancing the practice of physicians trained in both specialties. The Section on Med-Peds is committed to advocacy, education, improving communication, and research related to the practice and training of physicians in combined internal medicine and pediatrics.

Our Work

Physician Wellness: SOMP organizes the PHYSICIAN HEALTH AND WELLNESS exhibit booth yearly at the AAP National Conference to assist attendees in caring for their own health and well-being. Available resources include: one-on-one discussion with a Med-Peds physician and several educational resources on topics such as deep breathing and relaxation, best sleep strategies, digital detox, 15-minute workout, personal wellness individualized plan, mindful eating, physician support line, selfcare worksheet, well woman chart, and a list of adult screenings and immunizations. The booth offers free giveaway prizes!

Communications: BigM BigP, our member-focused newsletter! See a sample on our home page under Sample Newsletter.

Annual Case Competition: As a Med-Peds physician, you can submit an interesting Med-Peds case or quality improvement project during the annual call for abstracts (call usually closes mid-April). Many of the abstracts are shown as posters during the AAP National Conference. Two abstracts (1 case and 1 QI) make oral presentations during the AAP National Conference.

The Section reviews draft policy statements, clinical reports, books chapters and other documents for the AAP.

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) for Med-Peds Physicians Made Simpler publication for members.

Med-Peds 101 (log in required) publication for students and others considering a career in Med-Peds

Updating membership on MOC changes and the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Given the pace of change of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) with the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), we have used all our communications outlets to update the membership as these occur.

SOMP provides educational programming at the American College of Physician’s (ACP) Annual Meeting.

Section on Med-Peds is one of the largest sections in the AAP with over 3,500 members.

The SOMP will hold the following event during the 2025 AAP National Conference:
