Mission

The mission of the AAP Section on Endocrinology (SOEn) is to:

  • provide an educational forum for the discussion of problems and treatments relating to endocrinology
  • stimulate research in, and the teaching of, endocrinology and
  • disseminate knowledge of endocrinology through Academy channels to the medical profession at large.

Section Activities

Advocacy

  • Advocate for children with diabetes including affordable insulin and supplies for diabetes care.
  • Advocate for care of transgender and gender diverse children and adolescents on a local, state, and national level.
  • Advocate for subspecialty loan repayment

Education

Policy

  • Develop AAP policy on topics of important to pediatric endocrinology including type 2 diabetes, congenital hypothyroidism, retinopathy in children with diabetes, endocrine disruption chemicals and children’s health, caring for transgender and gender diverse children and adolescents.
  • Provide technical review and pediatric endocrinology expertise on a multitude of AAP policies and publications as well as external documents.

Member Engagement and Recognition

  • Offer opportunities for section members to be engaged with section activities through the participation on subcommittees, serving as faculty, serving as an author or reviewer of policy, serving as a liaison representative to external organizations, participating in advocacy opportunities.
  • Sponsor the Paul Kaplowitz, MD, Endowed Lectureship Award for Cost-Effective Care in Pediatric Endocrinology in collaboration with the Pediatric Endocrine Society.

Workforce

  • Promote a strong and healthy pediatric endocrinology workforce by engaging with medical students, residents, and fellowship trainees.
  • Presented a Subspecialty 101 webinar on Pediatric Endocrinology
  • Provide opportunities for members to become a mentor and/or mentee through the AAP Mentorship Program
  • Fellowship trainee representation on the SOEn Executive Committee.
  • For trainees, sponsor the Paul Kaplowitz Abstract and the AAP and PES Leona Cuttler Quality Improvement Award.
  • Support a Resident Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) grant.  The SOEn aims to improve medical care for chronic disorders that affect children including diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2) and endocrine diseases. The SOEn will sponsor ONE (1) resident project in relevant areas such as behavioral health, physical activity, nutrition, and health literacy in diabetes, as well as transition readiness for emerging adults with endocrine disorders. This award will provide funding and mentorship with a SOEn coach. Travel funds will be provided to the selected grantee to present their project at a mutually agreed upon conference.
