Mission
The mission of the AAP Section on Endocrinology (SOEn) is to:
- provide an educational forum for the discussion of problems and treatments relating to endocrinology
- stimulate research in, and the teaching of, endocrinology and
- disseminate knowledge of endocrinology through Academy channels to the medical profession at large.
Section Activities
Advocacy
- Advocate for children with diabetes including affordable insulin and supplies for diabetes care.
- Advocate for care of transgender and gender diverse children and adolescents on a local, state, and national level.
- Advocate for subspecialty loan repayment
Education
- Educate primary care physicians at the National Conference and other AAP CME activities.
- Publish an Annual AAP News Focus on Subspecialties article
- Online Subspecialty Review – PREP Endocrinology
- Developed a Choosing Wisely list for Pediatric Endocrinology
Policy
- Develop AAP policy on topics of important to pediatric endocrinology including type 2 diabetes, congenital hypothyroidism, retinopathy in children with diabetes, endocrine disruption chemicals and children’s health, caring for transgender and gender diverse children and adolescents.
- Provide technical review and pediatric endocrinology expertise on a multitude of AAP policies and publications as well as external documents.
Member Engagement and Recognition
- Offer opportunities for section members to be engaged with section activities through the section newsletter, serving as faculty, serving as an author or reviewer of policy, serving as a liaison representative to external organizations, participating in advocacy opportunities.
- Sponsor the Paul Kaplowitz, MD, Endowed Lectureship Award for Cost-Effective Care in Pediatric Endocrinology in collaboration with the Pediatric Endocrine Society.
Workforce
- Promote a strong and healthy pediatric endocrinology workforce by engaging with medical students, residents, and fellowship trainees.
- Presented a Subspecialty 101 webinar on Pediatric Endocrinology
- Provide opportunities for members to become a mentor and/or mentee through the AAP Mentorship Program
- Fellowship trainee representation on the SOEn Executive Committee
- Offer the annual Leona Cuttler award Quality Improvement Award to a pediatric endocrinology fellow in collaboration with the Pediatric Endocrine Society
