In this 3-part series, we address essential areas of adolescent health care critical for primary care pediatricians. In Part 1 we address the diverse needs of the adolescent and young adult population as it relates to preventative health. In Part 2 we focus on the ways in which we can help guide adolescents through the challenges of puberty, sexual education and health, contraception, pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood, among other issues. In Part 3 we map the transition from pediatric health care to adult care, including the unique challenges faced by individuals with chronic or complex illnesses.
