Summary: The personal papers of Dr Bret Ratner span the years of 1927–1957 and consist of published articles, manuscripts, transcripts, book chapters, reviews of others' work, letters to the editor, and correspondence. The subjects Dr Ratner wrote about in his work were pediatrics and immunology, many of the articles in this collection describe research he had done with asthma and allergies. His work appeared in medical journals and in popular magazines. All of the individual published work by Dr Ratner had to be labeled as such, Bret Ratner Papers, type of record (i.e., manuscript, article, etc.), title of record, author, journal title, volume, number, and date. The transcripts contained in this collection include round table discussions with other doctors, many of which took place at annual American Academy of Pediatrics meetings. Much of the correspondence relates to requesting or commenting on the work of other researchers and other researchers' thoughts on his work. The arrangement of the records is by type of record. Within each of these category titles are arranged in alphabetical order. More than two thirds of the collection is composed of Dr Ratner's published articles.

Biographical Note

Dr Bret Ratner was born on April 28, 1893. He attended New York University's medical college and graduated in 1918. He practiced medicine in New York City in the first half of the twentieth century. Dr Ratner specialized in pediatrics as the field developed in the United States in the early 1900s. He was also an allergist. A professor at the medical college at New York University, he taught courses in clinical pediatrics and immunology. He was one of the first members of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr Ratner kept extensive records of research in his areas of interest. Dr Ratner's papers had been in storage and were recently donated to the AAP by his son-in law who took over his practice upon his passing in 1957.
