We collaborate with national and global partners to deliver our evidence-based newborn health training programs to limited-resource countries around the world, working to ensure they are implemented in an integrated, effective and sustainable way.

Survive & Thrive Global Development Alliance

We are proud to be a part of the Survive & Thrive Global Development Alliance (GDA). Survive & Thrive is an alliance of government, professional health association, private sector and non-profit partners working with country governments and health professionals to improve health outcomes for mothers, newborns and children through clinical training, systems strengthening and policy advocacy.

The GDA was established in 2012 to energize critical health care interventions during the time when mothers and their children are most vulnerable—from pregnancy through childbirth, and childhood through age five.

Survive & Thrive aims to help save the lives of mothers, newborns and children by working alongside in-country governments and health professionals to implement high-impact health interventions that leverage the combined resources and expertise of government, professional health associations, private sector and non-profit partners. The Laerdal Foundation for Acute Medicine is one of the largest supporters of HBS as we partner to contribute to the following Sustainable Development Goals:

  • By 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births.

  • By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.

Laerdal Global Health has designed purpose-built simulators that enhance the learning and hands-on skill practice of all HBS programs. LGH has also provided in-kind support to HBS with their expert graphic design team who work with AAP editors and staff to develop the unique style of HBS learning materials. Laerdal is well known globally for the top honors they have achieved for their design excellence.

Latter-day Saint Charities has been implementing neonatal resuscitation programs for 3 decades. Their humanitarian signature programs are built on the principles of personal responsibility, community support, self-reliance, and sustainability. From the start in 2010, LDSC committed to HBS through their large network of healthcare professionals who conduct countless HBS courses.  They also have provided financial support to the AAP for an educational validation of HBB, which set the stage for many more newborn and maternal initiatives.  More recently, they have contributed to AAP efforts to:

  • Introduce HBB training in preservice settings in Mexico, for maximum sustainability.

  • Test the effectiveness of ECEB training in Nicaragua.

  • Field test the second edition of HBB in India.

  • Field test the second edition of HBB in Sierra Leone.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is proud to be a current recipient of a Ronald McDonald House Charities award to fund the Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) program in South Africa.  The AAP and partners are working to improve perinatal and neonatal outcomes in Eastern Cape, South Africa through training midwives and doctors in the HBB program.  Eastern Cape has the largest neonatal mortality rate in South Africa – 80 deaths per 1,000 births. Principal Investigators leading this project propose that deaths from birth Asphyxia will be reduced by 30%, and stillbirths will be reduced by 20%.
