Department of Education
Completion of Term Questionnaire

The Department of Education includes the divisions of Continuing Medical Education, Convention and Meeting Services, Workforce and Medical Education Policy, Life Support Programs, E-Learning, and Scholarly Journals and Professional Periodicals. The department develops and presents continuing medical education programs in over 60 pediatric topic areas, including the National Conference & Exhibition (NCE), for Fellows and other pediatric health care professionals who provide care for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.

The Division of Continuing Medical Education is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of AAP Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities. These activities include CME courses (subspecialty/section courses, Practical Pediatrics and PREP® The Course), the Future of Pediatrics Conference, and the National Conference & Exhibition (www.AAPexperieNCE.org). CME activity details are searchable through the PediaLink® CME Finder tool. The Division of CME provides primary staff support to the Committee on Continuing Medical Education (COCME), and its activities are directly linked to COCME activities, goals and objectives. The division is responsible for the accreditation of the AAP CME program. It administers the AAP CME transcript system. The division provides guidance on all CME activity development and designation of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for those CME activities initiated by AAP planning groups and editorial boards. The division provides joint and direct sponsorship (designation of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™) for CME activities sponsored by AAP districts, chapters and sections. It also processes AAP credit applications for external education programs.

The Division of Convention and Meeting Services manages all aspects of meeting logistics (ie, facilities, housing, technical exhibits, registration, on site childcare, tours, ground transportation, audiovisual, and food and beverage) for approximately 440 meetings per year. These meetings include: National Conference & Exhibition, Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting, CME courses, Grant Funded courses, Council/Committee/Task Force/Workgroup Meetings, District Meetings, Executive Committee/Board of Director's Meetings, meetings held in the AAP Conference Center, and official AAP events. Attendance at these meetings range from 5 to 11,000 people. Another major function of this division involves contract negotiations for all properties and vendors, such as: hotels, convention centers, drayage, audio-visual, child care, tours and shuttle, florists, photographers, security, restaurants, temporary help personnel and many other miscellaneous suppliers.

The Division of Workforce and Medical Education Policy guides the Academy in the formation of health policy related to the education, supply, requirements, demographics, and geographic distribution of general and subspecialty pediatricians. This involves managing a wide range of policy and regulatory issues for the Academy, including requirements for core and subspecialty residency education, the funding of graduate medical education, the efficacy of state-level incentive programs, the regulation of the pediatrician pipeline through federal legislation and appropriations, physician retirement patterns, and physician reentry into practice.

The Division addresses these issues, in partnership with the Committee on Pediatric Workforce (COPW), through its work with federal agencies and other organizations engaged in health policy development. The Division also manages the Committee on Pediatric Education (COPE), which serves as a thinktank and deliberative forum for the pediatric community on educational policy issues.

The Division of Life Support Programs is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of pediatric life support training programs for health care professionals and lay persons. The division provides administrative support for the AAP/AHA Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) which has trained 2.2 million healthcare professionals since 1987. Division staff also oversee NRP international implementation (in over 120 countries and 20 languages). The division oversees APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Program, a collaboration between the AAP and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). The APLS educational materials include a student resource manual, instructor CD-ROM, and Web site (www.APLSonline.com), which focus on the critical first hour of a pediatric illness or injury. The Pediatric Education Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) course, which was launched in 2000, trains emergency medical technicians and paramedics to better recognize, assess and manage ill or injured children. The Pediatric First Aid for Caregivers and Teachers (PedFACTs) course prepares caregivers and teachers to appropriately recognize and respond to the ill or injured child. In 2006 the division launched the Babysitter Lessons and Safety Training (BLAST!) course, which is a fun and affordable program to train future babysitters in childcare skills, safety, and first-aid. The division also oversees Infant CPR Anytime™, is a self-directed learning program that trains lay persons the principles of CPR in less than 30 minutes. The kit includes a personal inflatable infant CPR-practice manikin. Staff also assist in the product development for SimNewB, an interactive neonatal patient simulator developed through a strategic alliance with Laerdal Medical. Life Support staff coordinate the development and revision of the medical content for these courses and materials with the respective expert steering committees and direct the publishing of the textbooks, multimedia, online resources and other related materials for these programs. The division tracks the usage of these programs within the United States and encourages international implementation of the programs as deemed appropriate by other countries.

The Division of E-Learning provides dynamic online learning resources for pediatric professionals growth. We support this mission via PediaLink™, a web-based, custom-tailored educational resource providing CME opportunities and services. A wide variety of online courses are available on PediaLink™ including Education in Quality Improvement for Pediatric Practice (eQIPP) courses that currently satisfy the American Board of Pediatrics' Part IV PMCP© requirement.

The Division of Scholarly Journals and Professional Periodicals publishes all of the Academy's scholarly medical journals and professional periodicals, both in print and online. Pediatrics® is the premier scientific publication in pediatric medicine and the official journal of the Academy. An important AAP public service is AAP Policy, which is a free web site resource that hosts a comprehensive collection of more than 300 AAP policy documents. AAP News, the AAP's official monthly newsmagazine, delivers members and allied health care professionals timely pediatric and Academy news. Published monthly, AAP Grand Rounds™ offers a synopsis of the most pertinent articles to practicing pediatricians found in nearly 100 medical journals, packages them in a convenient newsletter format, and offers Continuing Medical Education (CME). NeoReviews.org™ is the first Academy online only review journal on leading edge neonatology topics and also offers CME. The Division administers PREP The Curriculum® - a two part, self-directed learning program designed to help pediatricians continue their education and prepare for the American Board of Pediatrics Program for Maintenance of Certification in Pediatrics® (PMCP®). This comprehensive program consists of the PREP® Self-Assessment Exercise (print, CD-ROM, and online) and Pediatrics in Review®. Pediatrics in Review® (print and online) is a continuing medical education journal that reviews current pediatric topics and presents cases in an easy-to-read format. In addition, PedJobs.org™ is the AAP online job database designed for both job seekers and employers. It offers search tools to help pediatric professionals and employers find the right job fit. It is also managed by the Division of Scholarly Journals and Professional Periodicals. PREP® ICU is a monthly subscription to 8 peer-reviewed critical care questions and critiques based on the American Boardl of Pediatrics content specifications.

Completion of Term Questionnaire

The AAP Department of Education has developed a "Completion of Term Questionnaire" for outgoing members of committees, editorial boards, steering committees, and other volunteer groups to reflect upon their years of participation and provide feedback on their experiences. This input is vital to ensuring that AAP members feel their work with the Academy is positive and rewarding. It will also allow the Academy to continually improve the quality of volunteer experiences and encourage continued member participation in these important educational initiatives.
