Prevention and Public Health Special Interest Group

The Prevention and Public Health Special Interest Group (PPH SIG) is a joint SIG between the Council on Community Pediatrics and the Section on Epidemiology. The SIG seeks to operationalize the AAP statement, The Pediatrician's Role in Community Pediatrics and establish a dynamic interface between clinical pediatric health care providers and public health.

The PPH SIG (see Public Health Resources) seeks to further the mission of the Council and the Academy by identifying, prioritizing, and promoting educational and training opportunities related to public health. The activity of the PPH SIG is to work to educate the members of the Council and the Academy on ways to improve the health outcomes of children through the mobilization of AAP fellows, residents, other health professionals, families, and community organizations.

Goals:

  1. Establish a dynamic interface between clinical pediatric health care providers and public health.
    • Provide educational opportunities that demonstrate and promote interactions between clinical medicine and public health through the development of AAP educational sessions that demonstrate collaborative models. This will be done through the identification and publicizing of successful models as well as providing a forum for highlighting new approaches.
    • Provide opportunities to develop linkages and collaborative activities between practitioners of clinical pediatrics and public health through electronic mailing list activities, mentorship programs, and grant opportunities.
  2. Operationalize the AAP Council on Community Pediatrics statement, The Pediatrician's Role in Community Pediatrics
    • Provide and/or identify educational and programming opportunities to develop the skills needed to practice effective community pediatrics.
    • Develop case studies for educational sessions highlighting integration of clinical medicine and public health
