Council on
Community
Pediatrics
Mission: To promote, support, and guide the dimensions of pediatric care that addresses the health needs of all children in the community.
Vision: To improve the health of all children and families in their communities, reduce health disparities, and promote health equity as a basic right.
Guiding Principles: To work toward the achievement of the recommendations in the AAP policy statement "The Pediatrician's Role in Community Pediatrics" through: Advocacy, Collaborations, Dissemination, Education, Innovation, Leadership, and Technical Assistance.
What's New:
2009 COCP Award Recipients: The COCP Executive Committee is pleased to announce the award recipients for 2009. Award recipients will be recognized at the Community Pediatrics Awards Luncheon during the 2009 NCE.

NCE 2009: The COCP will be sponsoring many events and educational sessions (including the Community Pediatrics Award Luncheon and part H program focused on obesity) at the 2009 NCE meeting in Washington, DC from October 17-20, 2009. This year the COCP has also published a 2009 NCE newsletter edition with all of the exciting community pediatrics happenings at the NCE.
Spring 2009 Community Pediatrics Newsletter: The May 2009 edition of the COCP newsletter is now available to members by clicking the link at the bottom of the page and signing into the Member Center using your AAP ID and password. Past editions of the newsletter are available to everyone on the Publications web page.
COCP Annual Report to the Membership for FY07/08:The COCP Executive Committee publishes an Annual Report to the COCP Membership highlighting projects and successes of the COCP over the past fiscal year.
COCP Promotional Materials: The COCP has put together new promotional materials about the Council and its work. Please feel free to use these to promote the work of the Council with your collegaues. Available are a COCP brochure, MTAP grant flyer, and Special Interest Group flyer.
Community Pediatrics Self-Assessment is debuted at the Pediatrics for the 21st Century Symposium at the 2007 NCE! The Community Pediatrics Self-Assessment was designed to help practicing pediatricians assess where they are in relation to community pediatrics activities as recommended in the COCP policy statement, The Pediatrician's Role in Community Pediatrics. Council Activities:
Educational and Networking Opportunities: The
Council holds an annual business meeting and a community pediatrics
reception and awards ceremony at the AAP Annual Meeting. In addition,
the Council sponsors educational sessions
and activities at AAP national, state, and other conferences.
Promoting Community-based Initiatives: By applying
for Community Access to Child
Health (CATCH) Funds and Healthy
Tomorrows Partnership for Children Program grants, and networking
with colleagues, Council members develop expertise in implementing
community-based initiatives. The Council awards Mentorship
and Technical Assistance Program (MTAP) grants to assist COCP
members to improve their community pediatrics skills and for developing
innovative programs within their community.
Recognition: Members can highlight activities
in the biannual council newsletter. The Council also recognizes
outstanding contributions to community pediatrics through the
annual Job Lewis Smith Award,
and other Council awards.
How to Join:
If you are already a member of the AAP and would like to become
a COCP member, join online by:
1. Go to http://www.aap.org/moc/indexEntry.cfm and login with your AAP ID and password.
2. Click on "Member Community".
3. Click on "Join a Section or Council" under Section, Council & Committee
Information.
4. Choose "Council on Community Pediatrics", answer a few questions, and click "Submit".
