Welcome to
the Section on Administration and Practice Management (SOAPM)
Richard Lander , MD, FAAP
Section Chairperson |
This is my first report as chair of the Section on Administration and Practice Management (SOAPM). I would like to take this opportunity to thank the membership for electing me to this position. It is certainly a privilege to follow in the impressive footsteps of Ed Saltzman, A. D. Jacobson, who facilitated my entrance into SOAPM, and Anne Francis. As chair, I hope that, together, we can take SOAPM's involvement in pursuing the business of medicine to even greater heights.
I have altered the committee structure within SOAPM. Each committee chair now has a vice-chair. Some of these vice-chairs have a few years of experience in SOAPM, and some are new to SOAPM, but all have expressed interest to be involved with SOAPM. This will lay the groundwork for the continuity of the management of SOAPM in the future. Any SOAPM member with a particular interest or expertise is encouraged to contact the heads of our committees. We look forward to your involvement with us.
I urge all interested SOAPM members to take a proactive involvement in their state chapters. It is important to ensure that your chapter has a pediatric council to interact with managed care organizations on a local level. This has immense positive impact upon the pediatricians in your community. It also will enable the Executive Committee to identify future leaders in our organization.
I am looking forward to continue the interaction between SOAPM and the Executive Board of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). In 1999, the AAP introduced the first Task Force on Reimbursement, which was chaired by Rob Squires who is now on the SOAPM Executive Committee. Since that time, the AAP has continually offered direction and resources with which to meet the needs of our members in the trenches. Section on Administration and Practice Management members have played an integral part in keeping private practice issues in front of the AAP Board. I promise to keep the interaction between SOAPM and the Board alive throughout my tenure as SOAPM chair. I will continue to keep the Board's feet to the fire where Practice Management issues are concerned.
The AAP cannot continue to thrive unless we, the individual members who make up the AAP enrollment, continue to thrive.
