Bob Grayson on gardening:
An outdoor activity which gets couch potatoes out in the fresh air and sunshine. It fits the above definition of a hobby accurately. It is rewarding to start with a seed, a bulb or small plant and to see it mature into a work of nature. It supplies the childhood need in all of us to get our hands back in the dirt and mud. And with cash flow problems these days, it can bring fresh fruit and vegetables to the dinner table. A plaque hanging in my garden says it all, and I quote,
“I hold the firm belief
that the purpose
of a garden is to
give happiness and
repose of the mind” by Gertrude Jekyll

Bob Grayson and his bromeliads.

Av Katcher in his beloved Dahlia garden: "This is a photo taken of me a few years back, tending to one of the Dahlia plants in the yard behind the barn on the place where we lived. We moved there in 1961, our second year at Hunterdon, and remained until 2006 when the huge old farmhouse became too much for us and we switched to a one story brick rancher in another part of the Flemington suburbs. At the time of this photo I was probably about 70 to 75, and had retired from practice, although I still had a connection at the Rutgers Medical School."
