Applying Clinical Research to Improve Newborn Care

Alan Jobe, MD
This year, the William A. Silverman lecture will be given by Alan Jobe, MD, an internationally-recognized expert in pulmonary biology and disorders of the immature lung. Dr. Jobe performed many of the metabolic and physiologic studies that resulted in FDA approval of surfactant for the treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome. His related research interests are in surfactant homeostasis in the adult lung, lung injury and lung development and he is the Principal Investigator for translational research studies designed to develop new strategies to induce fetal maturation and to minimize the risks of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants. Dr. Jobe also led the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network from 1996 to 2006. He has published more than 275 peer-reviewed articles, 150 chapters, editorials and commentaries, and has received numerous awards and honors.

Workshop on Perinatal Practice Strategies 2009: The Light Bulb Moment - Scottsdale, AZ (April 3-5, 2009)

Originally conceived and planned in 1988 by the late Joe Butterfield, this meeting is designed to help neonatologists in all types of practices learn skills necessary to "get the job done," as opposed to more traditional meetings designed to discuss treatment strategies, use of medications, and so on - or how to "do the job".

NeoPREP 2010, Newport Beach, CA (February 6-12, 2010)

NeoPREP is a 7-day intensive review of neonatal-perinatal medicine, at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa, that emphasizes the process of evidence-based clinical decision making and focuses on the scientific basis for the clinical practice of neonatology. The course is designed to meet a variety of educational needs, including preparation for the initial subspecialty certifying examination in neonatal-perinatal medicine.   • Preparing to participate in the Program for Maintenance of Certification in Subspecialties in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine administered by the American Board of Pediatrics.
  • Preparing for the initial board certification examination in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
