The American Academy
of Pediatrics (AAP) rolled out the Pediatric Education for Prehospital
Professionals (PEPP) course in March 2000. This innovative course
is the first of its kind geared specifically toward the prehospital
(EMTs and paramedics) provider and uses small group learning techniques
that help maximize retention of course material. Over the past three
years, over 46,000 providers and close to 4,000 Course Coordinators
have been trained using the PEPP course. In addition, the PEPP Program
was honored with the 2001 National Heroes Award for Innovation in
EMSC Product/Program Development.
If you or someone
on your staff is responsible for EMS continuing education PEPP could
be a very useful tool! Please visit the PEPP
Web site or contact the Division of Life Support Programs at 800/433-9016
ext 4795 or via e-mail at PEPP@aap.org.

Coding Continuum Models for Pediatric Emergency Medicine
Have you ever wondered if there is an easier way to figure out what E/M level to bill for your patients or how to make a decision to go to the next level when differentiating between patients? These Coding Continuums have been devised to express the various levels of service for common pediatric emergency medicine diagnoses and demonstrate the cumulative
effect of the key criteria for each level of service using a single diagnosis as the common denominator. Additionally, they illustrate the importance of other variables, such as patient age, duration, and severity of illness, social contexts, and comorbid conditions that often have key roles in pediatric cases. Therefore, they can be a useful tool for your practice.
The Coding Continuums are available for members as Adobe PDF files on the Member Center. Once signed in, click on Emergency Medicine and the Coding Continuums will be listed.
Disclaimer: These Coding Continuums were developed as an educational tool by the AAP Section on Emergency Medicine and the Committee on Coding and Nomenclature and have not been endorsed by the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS). They are subject to interpretation by both public and private insurance carriers.
