Helping Improve Pediatric Practice Outcomes Study (HIPPO)

Aims

Rapid-cycle Improvement Facet

The overall goal is to develop, implement and evaluate a sustainable approach to improving the quality of care provided to children in primary care practice settings. The specific aims are to:

Determine if office-based teams can engage in quality improvement processes-this particular study focuses on asthma;

Assess whether change efforts lead to improved care processes.;

Determine which program components are most useful in supporting office-based quality improvement.

Fostering the Appropriate Diagnosis Study Facet

The overall goal is to enhance the appropriate recognition and diagnosis of asthma in young children. The specific aims are to:

Design and develop a brief survey tool to identify children at high likelihood of having asthma;

Identify the range of characteristics related to illness, patients and the care environment that may influence the diagnosis of asthma;

Develop an outline for the content of two educational tools/materials to a) educate pediatricians about making a diagnosis of asthma and b) educate pediatricians about communicating the diagnosis of asthma to the patient and parent.
