Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure Study (CEASE)

Protocol Overview

If you decide to participate in this study you will be asked to:

  • Distribute a 5 question anonymous survey to all parents who come into the office for 3 consecutive days to determine study eligibility
  • Participate in a whole office training (lunch will be provided) with the study team to watch a study DVD and discuss study responsibilities
  • Allow a Research Assistant (paid for by the study) to approach parents in the office to enroll 100 parents who smoke.  The Research Assistant will need to fax communications to the study team and store a limited number of research materials securely while on site. The Research Assistant will be at the practice at the beginning of the study and only for the parent enrollment period (approximately 4-8 weeks)
  • Assign one person in your practice as the Practice Leader, who will be responsible for completing a survey at three different time points throughout the study
  • Provide the study team (via fax) updated contact information for parents who enrolled in the study and who provided phone numbers that are no longer in service
If you are assigned to the early intervention group you additionally will be asked to:
  • Participate in a peer to peer call (if you are the Practice Leader), which will take approximately 1 hour
  • Review the training manual, website and consult with study staff as needed
  • Distribute the CEASE Action Sheet, a single piece of letter-sized paper, to all parents at least once per year, and at every visit to all parents who smoke
  • Review charts of 10 patients for the presence of the CEASE Action sheet until the study benchmark (60% of charts) has been met

Your participation in the study will last approximately 13 months.
