Additional Guidelines and Tips for Preparing Young Investigator Award Applications
Additional guidelines for investigators submitting applications for NRP Young Investigator Grants:
Please include a one-paragraph statement that includes:
- Description of current research interests and any projects already in progress
- List of support available, e.g., technical assistance, equipment, individuals with specific expertise, features of the department/ clinical service/ laboratory that will help make the research more successful
Tips for preparing Young Investigator grant applications:
- Discuss the proposed study with your mentor before writing the application.
- Make sure the proposed studies can be substantially completed in an appropriate time frame.
- Be clear and concise in your description of the experimental design
- If there are more than 2 groups and/or more than 2 interventions or treatments, a table or diagram will help ensure that the reviewers clearly understand the experimental plan
- Seek advice from a statistician or an experienced researcher regarding the appropriate statistical tests to be used
- Detailed, step-by-step descriptions of specific analytical techniques are not required—it is acceptable to provide references to detailed methodology. If you or your mentor have preliminary data, this can be used to demonstrate that a given method works in your lab.
- Have your mentor or another senior scientist working in your field review the text before submitting the application.
