The chapter has identified a Chapter Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, Dennis Cooley, MD, FAAP, who attends meetings of the Kansas Bioterrorism Coordinating Council and the Kansas Advisory Council on Trauma. Dr Cooley also serves on the Clinical Resource Network, a statewide group of health professionals who serve as medical consultants to the Kentucky Department of Health during a public emergency.
The chapter regularly sponsors continuing education lectures on disaster preparedness, and disaster preparedness continues to be included in the Topeka area Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course (PALS) courses.
Thanks to the state EMS-C coordinator, Sara House, 17 pediatric disaster
life support courses have been held throughout the state. The courses include materials from
University of Massachusetts Medical School Pediatric Disaster Life Support and
American Medical Association's
Basic Disaster Life Support™ (BDLS®) classes. To date, Dr Cooley has been involved in 7 of these 1-day courses. Daniel Fagbuyi, MD, FAAP, AAP Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council member, has also been part of the faculty and contributed to the curriculum.
A Governor's summit on novel influenza A (H1N1) was held in August 2009 and included a presentation by Dr Cooley. Dr Cooley plans to attend the First Biennial Kansas Homeland Security Summit in December 2009.
