Workforce Planning and Policy

The mission of the Academy: " ...is to attain optimal physical, mental and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents and young adults. To accomplish this mission, the Academy shall support the professional needs of its members..." depends on the pediatrician workforce.

The improvement of children's health occurs through the efforts of these professionals who draw on their training and experience to deliver within a medical home the best possible pediatric care and to serve as child advocates. To this end, shaping the education of pediatricians, through graduate medical education policy and regulations, is an equally vital consideration.

In order to share information, data and perspectives on the important topics of workforce and graduate medical education planning and policy, as well as garner feedback, the following Web sites have been created:

AAP Committee on Pediatric Workforce

The Pediatrician Workforce: Current and Future Prospects
(Pediatrics, July 2005)

Pediatrician Workforce Statement
(Pediatrcs, July 2005)

Mapping Health Care Delivery for America's Children

Division of Graduate Medical Education and Pediatric Workforce

In addition, these Web sites will provide information pertaining to the influence of gender on the workforce and the pediatric subspecialty workforce:
