Health Policy Fellowship Opportunities

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Centers for Disease Control Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and AcademyHealth Health Policy Fellowship

Description:
The Health Policy Fellowship will give researchers the chance to work with NCHS research, statistical and computing staff to learn about the Center's data systems; access and analyze data; participate in projects to improve the quality and policy relevance of data systems; and develop joint analytic products for publication.

Duration: The duration of a full time fellowship is 13-24 months. Upon completion of the first year and under certain circumstances, NCHS may consider a one-year extension of the fellowship.

Location: Hyattsville, Maryland

Compensation: Doctoral student fellows may qualify for a salary based on a GS-9/11/12 civil service equivalent, which in 2006 ranged from $44,856 to $84,559. Post-doctoral, health professional, and faculty candidates may qualify for a salary based on a GS-12/13/14/15 civil service equivalent of $65,048 to $139,774 in 2006. If appointed, fellows may be eligible for benefits such as health and life insurance. Fellows on IPAs (Intergovernmental Personnel Act-fellows remain employees of their home institution) will continue to receive their current salary and benefits.

Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship Program (Institute of Medicine)

Description:
Designed to develop the capacity of outstanding mid-career health professionals in academic and community-based settings to assume leadership roles in health policy and management. Begins with 12 week orientation at the IOM, then applicants negotiate a position within a congressional or executive office with an active interest in health issues.

Duration: 1 year, September-to-August (up to 10 fellowships offered annually)

Location: Washington, DC

Compensation: $94,000 from foundation + fringe benefits corresponding to the level of salary support, and relocation expenses

Funding: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Deadline: November 16, 2007 (for 2008-2009 program)

White House Fellowships

Description:
Each fellow works full time as a special assistant to a Cabinet member or senior presidential advisor and also participates in an education program designed to nurture his or her development as a leader.

Duration: 1 year, September 1st to August 31st (11-19 fellowships offered annually)

Location: Washington, D.C.

Compensation: GS 14 step 3 level, approximately $91,000 annually

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellowships

Description:
The AAAS sponsors 10 science and technology policy fellowship programs to provide the opportunity for accomplished and societally aware postdoctoral to mid-career scientists and engineers to participate in and contribute to the public policy making process of the federal government. Fellowship applicants required to have doctoral level degree. The fellowship programs are designed to provide each individual with a unique public-policy learning experience and to bring technical backgrounds and external perspectives to decision-making in the US government.

Duration: 1 year, September-to-August

Location: Washington, DC

Compensation: stipend ranges from $62,000 - $81,000

The Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation Public Policy Fellowship Program

Description:
The Kennedy Foundation supports a Public Policy Fellowship Program for professionals in the field of intellectual disabilities. The program provides exposure to the public policy decision-making process through work on the staff of a congressional committee or a federal department. The expectation is that fellows will become future leaders in the field of disabilities.

Duration: 1 year, full-time January-to-December

Location: Washington, DC

Compensation: stipend totaling $80,000 plus relocation expenses

Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) Fellowships

Description:
SRCD Policy Fellows - in both Congressional and Executive Branch placements - work as "resident scholars" at the interface of science and policy. the goals of these fellowships are: (1) to contribute to the effective use of scientific knowledge in developing public policy, (2) to educate the scientific community about the formation of public policy, and (3) to establish a more effective liaison between developmental scientists and the federal policy-making mechanisms.  SRCD Fellows participate with other scientific disciplines in the fellowship programs of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  Both early and mid-career doctoral level professionals of all scientific disciplines related to child development are encouraged to apply.

Duration: 1 year, September 1st to August 31st (Must be a SRCD member)

Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program

Description:
The program is designed to augment clinical training by providing new skills and perspectives necessary to achieving leadership positions both within and outside the walls of academia. It stresses training in the quantitative and qualitative sciences underlying health services research essential to improving health and medical care systems. The program emphasizes community-based research and leadership training.

Duration: It offers two to three years of graduate-level study and research as part of a university-based, post-residency training program.

Location: The four institutions selected to train the program participants are: University of California, Los Angeles; University of Michigan; University of Pennsylvania; and Yale University.

Compensation: Ranges from $48,000 to $50,000 per year, depending on the training site.

Deadline: The application process begins 18 months before candidates seek entrance into the Program. Appointments are effective July 1 each year.

Children and Family Fellowship (Annie E. Casey Foundation)

Description:
The foundation established the fellowships in 1993 to help foster qualities necessary to achieve successful reform or youth-and family-serving institutions and systems.

Duration: January-to-November

Location: 3 months field placement, otherwise Baltimore and New York

Compensation: Stipend matching current salary plus 5% up to a max of $95,000; travel and some living expenses also covered.
